From the majority of these encounters and conversations, I identified little recognition that television producers were altering proverb content and folktales to convey gender values the educated producers believed were necessary for an informed and enlightened citizenry, despite an increased number of regional radio programs devoted to explicating and discussing the meaning of Moroccan proverbs in 2012â14.15 However, that did not mean that the intentions of producers utilizing hadra lmizÄn in their programming to convey âmodernistâ Moroccan values were entirely missing their mark. Their message resonated with those who shared the same Moroccanness vision. One evening as I sat eating dinner in the home of a successful Fassi businessman and his family, the discussion turned to ḥadÄ«dÄn and how much this man, his mother-in-law, and ten-year-old son enjoyed the programming. This family self-aligned with a cosmopolitan, educated Islam. The wife was training to be a state-sponsored female religious guide (٠رشÙدة [mÅ«ršīda]). They collaboratively constructed a happy response that these programs discouraged folk magic at the same time as valorizing their traditional past. They didnât mention gender or disability equity in relation to the program at all.
